A Guide to TCM Pattern Concepts
TCM patterns are traditional interpretive categories built from multiple observations. They are not diseases, laboratory values, organ-function measurements, or a substitute for medical diagnosis.
Qi deficiency
A traditional description of reduced functional energy; not a diagnosis of fatigue, anemia, or endocrine disease.
Yin deficiency
A traditional description associated with relative dryness or heat; not a hormone or fluid measurement.
Yang deficiency
A traditional description associated with reduced warming function; not a thyroid, adrenal, or kidney diagnosis.
Dampness
A traditional organizing concept for heaviness or accumulation; not measured body fluid, infection, or edema.
Heat and Cold
Relative TCM qualities used in pattern differentiation; they do not replace temperature measurement or medical assessment.
Blood stasis
Traditional terminology about constrained circulation; not evidence of thrombosis or a clotting disorder.
How to use this guide
Use these definitions to understand language in TCM education, not to self-diagnose or select treatment. Similar symptoms or tongue appearances can have many causes.
